COMBINE CODING WITH ACTIVE PLAY AND PUT IT IN EVERY CLASSROOM

PLAY IS AN INSTINCT.
A FORCE.
Unruly Splats are programmable floor tiles that let students control lights, sounds, and scoring to create and play their own active games in any classroom—using our block-coding app.
When I first joined Unruly, I was brought on to help bring the product to market by designing and building a block-based coding app (with Unity developer Humberto Machuca) that connects to the Splats via Bluetooth. The app allows students to program their Splats and create their own active games. After that, I designed the retail packaging—and we were off and running!
MORE THAN HARDWARE
We shifted our focus from retail sales to the education market and launched the Unruly Membership—a program that offered schools far more than just hardware.
We developed a full-service, cross-curricular computer science program for grades K–8, designed to integrate coding and active play into all kinds of classrooms across an entire school.
To support this, we built a new educator portal where teachers could manage class rosters, access lesson content, join competitions, and more—all in one place.
A BRAND APART
Unruly
adjective : not readily ruled, disciplined, or managed
Choosing the name Unruly for an edtech company built for schools? Bold. So there was no way I was going to design a passive brand system to go with it. This wasn’t a time to whisper—it had to be a scream.
I created a brand that’s bold and electric—built to reflect the action, movement, and energy of the Unruly experience. And because it’s me, there had to be a healthy dose of humor baked in.
My biggest inspiration? Not other edtech brands, but skateboarding culture—raw, expressive, and unapologetically Unruly. My vision was to create a counterculture to the safe, sanitized trends lining classroom shelves (or worse, closets). This brand was never meant to sit quietly..
We had to break some rules.
